Details: In 1818 Velay of Paris published a new mural entitled La Bataille d’Heliopolis, designed by Jean-Julien Deltil and featuring the victorious campaign of Napoleon’s General Kleber in Egypt fighting the Mamelouks. Deltil’s troops and horses were excellently drawn but by comparison the landscape was poor, probably due to his lack of resource materials. de Gournay created a new landscape using for inspiration the wonderful sketches of David Roberts R.A published a decade after Deltil’s original design work. This, combined with Deltil’s figures creates the dramatic design shown here. Named after the manufacturer, Velay colourway is a copy of the original colour palette used in 1818.

Installation 1:  Napoleon’s Campaign in Egypt design in Payprus colourway on scenic paper. Portobello Hotel, London.
