de Gournay created this pattern using a number of sources for inspiration, most renowned amongst which is the Chinese wallpaper from the Wellington Bedroom at Chatsworth, decorated by the 6th Duke of Devonshire at the end of the Regency period. The room is named after the Duke of Wellington who slept there in December 1843 when he was a member of the house party for the visit of Queen Victoria. The paper in this room shows the trend for adding birds, flowers and other details as appliqués taken both from left-over scraps of the original and from unrelated sources.
Sans Souci incorporates a number of the Cavendish banana plants, Musa cavendishii, included in the wallpaper on the south wall of the Wellington Bedroom. This strain was grown successfully at Chatsworth by Joseph Paxton after 1829 and later a legend arose that he had sent out expeditions to China to search for this species after he had first seen it in the wallpaper!
