Details: The original design by de Gournay shows the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Palmyra rising out of the Syrian Desert as they would have appeared to the English travellers who re-discovered the site for the West in 1751. The scale of the ruins attests to the vision and determination of the Arah Queen Zenobia who succeeded in building an empire to challenge Rome, but whose failure ultimately led to the destruction of this magnificiently elegant and mysterious city.

Installation 1: The Ruined City of Palmyra design in Sepia colourway on scenic paper. Interior design by Sphinx.
