Belton - Standard Edo
Dimensions: de Gournay wallpapers are produced as panels in any height up to 4.3m. Total panel length is 0.60 more than the chosen design height when ordering via the straight run method and 0.30m more than your wall height when ordering via the tailored method. These wallpapers are 0.915m wide after trimming except where marked. Customisation of design elements, colourways and panel heights are fully available though subject to additional charge.
Details: This design combines the popular theme of colourful birds and pretty butterflies darting between the trunks of a mature bamboo forest with, at the base, a frieze of Chinese characters acting out scenes from everyday 18th century Chinese life. The figures and birds are presented in the Chinese manner without regard for perspective. This and the fact that the figures and their activities showed a completely alien world to the eyes of the average Western viewer made the pattern both exciting and exotic.
The design, a part of de Gournay’s Chinoiserie Collection since 1995, has been greatly reworked here to bring it closer in feel to the delightful late 18th century oriental bedroom at Belton house, Lincolnshire that acted as our original inspiration. In this room the chinoiserie theme is continued through the bamboo design border wallpaper and bamboo wallpaper wainscot that de Gournay also offer in this collection and by painting faux bamboo effects onto all the wooden joinery. The bedroom was a favourite of King Edward VIII, who requested it whenever he stayed at Belton.
