Collection: Chinoiserie

Details: In de Gournay’s Chantilly climbing vines covered in small blooms wind their way around willowy and elegantly spiky bamboo above a simple mossy ground while colourful butterflies flit from flower to flower between the forest of bamboo stems.

Inspiration for this pattern came from many sources, bamboo being a popular element in all aspects of Chinese life and therefore in Chinese art as well. Rooms such as the Chinese Bedroom at Belton discussed elsewhere in this book used bamboo to achieve different styles, but in the Queen of Scot’s Dressing Room at Chatsworth it appears employed in a monochromatic palette similar to those shown here and with the same delicate feel as Chantilly.

The suite of rooms at Chatsworth, of which the dressing room was a part, were remodelled by the 6th Duke of Devonshire in the 1830’s under the guidance of the architect Wyatville and the Chinese paper was installed at this time. The room’s name dates back to before the late Regency remodelling to the original Elizabethan house. Mary Queen of Scots had been placed by Queen Elizabeth I in the custody of the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury who lived at Chatsworth for part of the year. Between 1570 and 1581 these were the rooms in which Mary stayed on the seven occasions in which she accompanied the Earl to Chatsworth.
