These wallpapers are 0.915m wide after trimming except where marked. Customisation of design elements, colourways and panel heights are fully available though subject to additional charge.

Collection: Chinoiserie

Details: Chelsea contains outsized tree peonies with voluptuous petals growing amongst a profusion of smaller blossom flowers while jewel like butterflies dance amongst their branches. The traditional mossy ground has been omitted and there are no birds in this evolution of a traditional Chinoiserie pattern giving it an interestingly contemporary feel which is reflected in the colourways that have been developed.

The Chelsea design was developed by de Gournay’s design team based upon a pattern held in the archives of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Despite the modern feel of Chelsea, it can trace its roots directly back to the earliest recorded imported Chinese papers at the end of the 17th century. Records remain of an auction sale in Birchin Lane, London in 1695 at which “66 1/2 pieces of ‘Japan’ paper for hangings” were offered and at around the same time Mrs. Philip Lybbe Powys, known as an arbiter of taste in the period, wrote of her admiration for the fine India paper, supplied by the firm of Crompton & Spinnage of Cockspur Street in London’s Charing Cross for Lady Blount’s dressing room.
