Dimensions: de Gournay wallpapers are produced as panels in any height up to 4.3m. These wallpapers are 0.915m wide after trimming except where marked. Customisation of design elements, colourways and panel heights are fully available though subject to additional charge.

Collection: Chinoiserie

Details: A rich mix of fruit trees including colourful pomegranates, peaches, green lemons, lychees and plums intermingle with flowering tulip and peony trees amongst bonsais growing from porcelain jardinières. The result is a richly coloured, grand and ebullient design often used to create the most dramatic spaces. The various fruits are rich with symbolism in Chinese culture. The peach tree, for example is a symbol for longevity as well as having other auspicious attributes. The wood of the tree was said to ward off evil and ancient warriors would craft weapons from it. Taoist magic was made with the petals of the peach blossoms whose effects were said to put men into an intense trance of love. It is also told that the Peach plant of immortality located in the Kun Lun mountains would only produce fruit once every 3,000 years and that when this happened the Eight Immortals would gather and eat of the magic fruit, assuring their continued immortality. Similar layers of meaning too numerous to discuss in detail here are associated with the other fruits.

The Jardinières & Citrus Trees design was created by de Gournay as a faithful reproduction of a partial set of antique panels belonging to a client from whom we received a commission to copy the antique and complete it in order to supply enough panels to furnish their dining room. The additional portion of the pattern amounting to approximately half, was created from scratch by de Gournay’s designers to form the seamless extension displayed here.
