de Gournay
Egypt fighting the Mamelouks. Deltil’s troops and horses were excellently drawn but by comparison the landscape was poor, probably due to his lack of resource materials. de Gournay created a new landscape using for inspiration the wonderful sketches of David Roberts R.A published a decade after Deltil’s original design work. This, combined with Deltil’s figures creates the dramatic design shown here. Named after the manufacturer, Velay colourway is a copy of the original colour palette used in 1818.
